Filcos are really damned good keyboards.

I'm not a complete expert on this, but essentially one of the huge selling points of a high-end PS/2 keyboard is that using the PS/2 bus allows for what keyboard nerds call "N-key Rollover;" this means that you can never cause ghost strokes or keys to stop registering by hitting too many keys too fast—this is a limitation that USB keyboards will always have.

Anyway, I don't really know about how the specifics for the USB & PS/2 system work on high end keyboards like that. It has a mini-USB port in the back of they keyboard and you plug whichever cable you want into it, right? This is a complete shot in the dark, but I would guess that they are all true PS/2 keyboards with what is essentially a single PS/2 port replicator built right into them as a means of gaining full USB support.

If any of you are really interested in completely nerding the hell out about keyboards, I can recommend the fine folks over at the GeekHack forums. Things you will never have imagined wanting to know about keyboards will be made clear and fascinating there. This is also where I learned how to paint keyboards.

I love covers. big_smile

Exactly. The beauty there is you get to draw contrast and put a focus on the quality of the original composition even in a fairly rudimentary rendering, as well and the expressive quality of well-done sequencing and programming.

If we wanted to be super snobs, we'd refer to really good "8-bit covers" as "Nintendo/C64/Whatever Arrangements;" successfully rendering a well-known song on such a radically different instrument requires a lot of work.

Man I mean we can bitch about people ripping off our work all we want, but those Crystal Castles kids are still getting paid. mad

Ok I mean really I am taking this to an extreme here, but really I mean what we do is so marginal and incomprehensible to the average person that exploitation "artists" can pass off something mediocre as something groundbreaking just because it happened to be accessible enough and in the right venue for mass consumption – whether it be a "big name" with some uncleared samples and a claim to a magical MIDI box that makes C64 sounds, or a youtube account full of "clever" things like "8-bit covers."

At the end of the day though, I think being open and communicative about the kinds of fraud we see occurring at the fringes of this admittedly esoteric scene is the best way to negate future offenses. When people understand what we do, they won't be as readily accepting of plagiarism.

I immediately thought of the Nord Electro, so I'd say success.

Edit: add a Nord sticker on it!

I was actually trying to stencil on a little reworked logo I made, the one that's currently my avatar:

Unfortunately, I'm not very good at making stencils. The text has to be about a centimeter high to fit, and I'm just not that handy with an x-acto knife. I could have vinyl decals die cut, but that can be expensive. I'll keep working on it. wink

Do we actively maintain any sort of cm.org "blacklist," or keep any sort of organized documents and records about people who've defrauded members of the community?

Just wondering, I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to do something like that, but I think it's generally good to keep track of stuff like this.

Scene Solidarity, lol.

Whoa.

I just finished this LSDj keyboard:

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I hadn't painted a keyboard before, and the finish came out great – it doesn't feel grimy or like there's anything gross covering the plastic. Very tactile.

I was trying to emulate the visual styling of a Nord Electro, but I'm not sure how well that happened. All of the grey control keys kind of break up the immense redness of the façade. That said, I think it looks clean and functional. Yay. big_smile

The only problem is that ugly fucking Windows key. mad

God fucking damn.

You can sign me up for at least two of those along with a straight grey that I'll be painting.

I used to make a lot of money doing this, but the problem is that I could only ever get paid in BitCoin.

I've been doing a lot of research on this mod, but I've yet to attempt it. I'm highly motivated to work it out, though, because I hate destroying the DMG-07 link boxes to make keyboards or adapters. (Tangentially, I'm also currently developing a non-destructive DMG-07 Adapter mod.)

Anyway, it was a bitch to track this item down, but I finally found a suitable panel-mount 6pin mini-DIN (AKA PS/2) female jack:

CUI inc. MD-60CV from DigiKey

This thing will take up as little internal space as possible in a DMG case, and in theory one could use ribbon cable the same way it's typically used in pro sound mods to take up as little space in wiring as possible. However it's still tricky to find useable surface area on the DMG case where it can be mounted.

I think I'll probably end up using kitsch's custom case for any DMG I'll eventually wire up this way — That extra square corner looks like just enough flat space to mount this socket.

Let me just give an announcement to everyone searching to replace their DMG speakers:

The ones that are easily found in Radioshack, the 8 ohm mini speakers, their magnets are too big and the case will not shut unless you cut space out of the battery compartment. Or unless you are a wizard.

I actually found a way to do this without modifying the case. I took pictures when I tried it just in case (heh) it worked, so I'll be posting a tutorial thread in the near future. I'll edit the link into this post when that thread goes up.

Sorry for the thread necromancy dudes – I hope it's at least somewhat justified in this situation.
