Huh, ok. I may try myself, with the hopes that some sort of fluke will happen. But thanks for the help.
or... you could just add in a transistor:

A color screen would require a more-capable CPU, and that would mean there would be a back PCB that would also need to be made.
...if there is already an FPGA in the mix, then it wouldn't be impossible to take the DMG's four shades of grey and 'colorize' them with user-selectable palettes - just like the GameBoy Color and Super GameBoy did!
Took the plunge, submitted my pledge and bought myself a Zero - and just a few seconds before they hit their funding goal!
...on a related note, here are a couple of different 'Dingoo in a GameBoy' hacks:
Want!
...but no shipping to Australia?
this would be made very attractive if you buckled down on a source for some confirmed ease-of-implementation LCD screens for people looking to buy your product and build it in a DMG case.
Another display possibility is to drive an LCD module directly from the Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins rather than using the 'video out':
http://spritesmods.com/?art=rpi_arcade&page=2
...these little integrated LCD modules can be found even more cheaply than the 'car reverse camera' LCDs:

PS. Jeroen Domburg's blog at spritesmods.com that I just linked to above is well worth checking out - heaps of awesome projects, including a GBA-MIDI hack!
uXe, looks good, but i dont get the point? sure for the Pi in a DMG, but why the nes board in a DMG? other than the Pi example?
I want one not even knowing why id want it though!
Well, apart from the Pi example, another potential application was nicely summed-up by Theta_Frost in the very first reply to this thread:
I admit though, it would be nice to just have a GB shell with a cable coming out of the bottom to act as display and control for the NES.
...like this:
uXe - i feel terrible suddenly, such a vulture! i guess thats my way of showing some sort of support. i'd like to see this thing live in some fashion.
Don't feel bad 8bitDAD - seriously! The idea behind crowd-funding the project is to have a streamlined / centralised way of taking pre-orders, and setting the target at 100 boards means being able to meet the break-point in pricing for a production run and keep the costs down for everybody... things are moving quite slowly though, so I may have been a tad over-optimistic to think that I would be able to immediately reach a hundred other people in the world with the same enthusiasm for the project as me! Anyway, the point is that I absolutely plan to get boards into the hands of everybody who has been generous enough to give their support - whether we hit the target or not, I will find a way to make this happen!
8bitDAD - the LCD is in the mail and on its way to you! ...and regarding prototypes - let's give the project 14 days to finish before we start picking over its bones!
this is amazing ! good work man !
Thanks!

...the best sources of information on suitable LCD screens are modding forums, which often have whole sections dedicated to sharing experiences and recommendations for potential candidates:
http://www.made-by-bacteria.com/forum/v
m.php?f=60
http://forums.benheck.com/viewforum.php?f=8
http://forums.modretro.com/viewforum.php?f=6
And as I mention on the project page, there are also sources available where you can buy just a bare LCD + controller board, and know what you are getting without having to dismantle a screen to find out what is inside:
http://www.adafruit.com/category/63_110
http://www.aeicomp.com/
I don't feel like I can give an informed recommendation because I only bought two different screens to try, and out of those two I decided to use this one:
http://feeldo.net/products/139-digital- ensor.aspx
Which I am very happy with, it is a great fit, and the display looks good - but I wouldn't necessarily want to recommend it because the LCD is hot-glued to its enclosure which makes disassembly a bit less than straight-forward! (a little isopropyl alcohol does work wonders for 'de-activating' hot glue though!)
The other model I bought was a 'Pustom' 2.5" LCD, which isn't glued together and comes apart easily without any fuss - this model is well-documented on the modding forums I mentioned earlier:
http://www.made-by-bacteria.com/forum/v
amp;t=1986
http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php
mp;t=31251
but it is a little bulkier and would require some modification to the GameBoy shell so I decided against it - I would be happy to send it to you for free if you think you might use it?
Another thing to consider is that the Raspberry Pi also has a 'DSI' connector for interfacing directly to an LCD, rather than using the composite video output - but unfortunately the firmware doesn't support it yet and the most recent and optimistic estimate is that we still have half a year to wait:

How do you power the lcd ? via a separate supply ? usb ? I'm looking for a cheap way to add a lcd to the rpi.
Yes, I am using a separate power supply - these little screens are usually intended to be used in a car, so are designed to be powered by the car's 12V battery. Depending on the particular screen you buy some people have had luck experimenting with supplying lower voltages - or have found that their screen was regulating the 12V down, and so were able to supply a lower voltage and bypass the onboard regulator. The USB ports on the Pi are notorious for being under-powered though, so you would need to add in a powered USB hub if you wanted to try and run the screen from USB power...
I was thinking this might be cool with a Raspberry Pi and lo-and-behold you have a video of that on your site. Might it even be possible to fit the RPi into one of Kitsch's new cases if the battery compartment were removed?
Totally possible - somebody even went to the trouble of making a 3D-modelled video with cheesy music to demonstrate the possibility!
(Bear in mind though, that if you remove the battery compartment then you are also removing the support posts that sit behind the buttons...)
^ or if i removed the battery compartment altogether on an alternative back?
would it fit then? with room for a li-po battery pack too possibly? (i don't have one yet)
just curious..... i may/maynot by considering something like that
An alternative back-half of the case mold would be a truly awesome thing kitsch!!
You could customise it to add holes in the right places and the right shape for the Pi's connectors - and if possible, adding a little extra depth could make a big difference!
There is a nice thread here http://bit.ly/RasPiBoy by the creator of the above video with some good pictures showing different possibilities for fitting the Pi into a GameBoy:
8bitDAD wrote:curious if there would be any reason why piggy would fail to run on rasbian, the raspberry pi optimized build of debian linux. I think it'd be pretty rad to build a dedicated piggy tracker R-pi. What with the customization options and ability to add components to the Rpi, it could turn out pretty rad. and cheaper than a dingoo/caanoo/psp.
Yeah. But not quite as portable unless you build a screen and interface device around it.
You mean something like this?
