Nice, I'm currently trying to go in a similar direction. I'm mainly struggeling with mix and arrangement, and you have some nice ideas in there. I like your choice of instruments, love that sweeping pad in the middle section. It's a bit long for a breakdown.. the switch to wubstep could work right after the DnB section, so maybe use the ambient-ish part as intro and make a return for the DnB feel for the finale? Can't say anything about the mix right now, the speakers I have at work cut off anything below 220Hz

Good job, everyone!
I'll update the list with the new links as soon as I have a spare minute

Re: JAPAN!!! (88 replies, posted in General Discussion)
My main problem is with the information policy of TEPCO, because what they're telling doesn't really match up with what is happening. Reactor 4-6 where said to be safe and under control with no trouble for days, then suddenly out of nowhere reactor 4 is burning for 'unknown reasons'. Stuff like that doesn't really help to reduce panic, no wonder the media is in a frenzy and people are getting paranoid.
Strange days when SA provides one of the few unbiased, calm news sources.

Where is Saitone located? If google translated his last tweet (17hrs ago) right, he seems to have no power or water.

Re: Does anyone know or remember the lofi group Sputnik Sweethearts? (15 replies, posted in General Discussion)
Hmm, my google-fu is weak
I found a small recommendation with a link to the label page in a german e-zine from 2003
The last.fm search can't find them, but their page is there: http://www.last.fm/music/Sputnik%20Sweethearts
Seems there are a few more songs out. Unfortunately, if you hover on the mp3 links on the archive.org snapshots, the files have rather generic names, so a file search doesn't help much. Torrent and file-crawlers come up empty, too.

This is looking good, I like the Another-World-y graphics. The paper texture is a nice touch- you could try to add an offset to the foreground texture, so it'd look like two layers of paper. Could be cool together with something like parallax scrolling.

Re: How do I get my final track louder? (25 replies, posted in Audio Production)
Could be several things. For one, replay volume doesn't always equal render volume. Check your DAW for render settings. Next, how does the waveform look in an editor? You could have spikes (usually high frequencies at the attack of a wave), which get reported as 'in the red' while most of your track is considerably quieter. Then there's waveform stacking (don't know the correct term for this), where waves pile up in such a way that they lift the whole y-axis action away from zero, which decreases the dynamic range.
The way I do it, I usually go source->{effect chain->limiter->mixer (3-band eq)->}limter->compression->10 band peak eq. The stuff in {} is only for multitrack recording. Limiting takes care of spikes, compression boosts the quiet stuff, 10 band eq to accentuate. Settings on limiter and compressor will determine how 'loud' your track is.
During master phase I often have a waveform/histogram plotter running, so I can see how to fix things.
Disclamer: I also often struggle with mixing/mastering, so I don't claim absolute knowledge on this.

Re: HOW TO MAKE CHIP MUSIC (48 replies, posted in General Discussion)
Establish a source sound. Open the step sequencer on your music production software. The method for doing this varies from program to program, but the step sequencer is a common feature on most commercially available sequencing software, including Reason, Cubase, Logic and Pro Tools. Assign a wave-form to the step sequencer. This becomes the carrier wave. Typically the easiest way of assigning a wave-form to the step sequencer is to click "filter" in the step sequencer options. This opens up a range of editing options for customizing the wave-form
OK!
Customize the wave-form to approximate the typical eight-bit tone. Adjust the filter parameters, oscillator and wave-form shape until you establish a tone that you like. The sound of an eight-bit synth is typically monophonic, meaning that you can only play one note at a time.
OK!
Add rapid arpeggios. Chip music is characterized by fast, sweeping arpeggios. The method of adding arpeggios depends on the program, but the typical method is to select "arpeggio" on the step sequencer interface. Open the "run" mode option and select "repeat." This means the wave-form repeats the arpeggio indefinitely until you hit another note. Select the fastest arpeggio as a starting point and adjust the speed downward to suit your taste.
OK!
Select a tempo by adjusting the beats per minute value in the audio sequencer. One hundred and twenty beats per minute is typically the default tempo; increase this to approximately 200 beats per minute as a starting point.
OK!
Select record and play in a basic melody. Add "delay" to the wave-form. Open up the plug-in menu and select "delay." Typical delay settings for chip music have low feedback and moderately high delay speeds.
OK!
Add percussion. Assign a basic electronic drum sound to channel two. Use only basic percussion patterns.
OK!
IT'S A BEAUTY!!

Haha irrlicht, I was actually thinking about adding rhodes and overtone singing to my list! I just thought if I get to specific, I'd never be able to finish that list.
Jellica: Gah! I think everyone has an alarm clock with that sound (I need a cacophony of three alarm clocks and one mobile to awake from my torpor, and one of them sounds like that)

Re: gifs as art (28 replies, posted in Motion Graphics)
Me too! I always liked the idea of animated gifs for pixel art, because they're so tied to the medium. For example, I'd love to see more animated cover art for net releases (as long as it's not flashing me blind).
