I charge in fakebits per Ångström

I wasn't being serious, just semi-sarcastically responding to an above post that suggested that people use software only because the can't get their hands on hardware. wink

This discussion is sooo worn out. I like to use software because it's versatile and cheap. I like timbres, not machines.

Maybe he just can't afford hardware, don't be too hard on him sad

You know, the cheating guys always win. big_smile

I think it's an excellent idea!

kitsch has the list. And another +1 for Aphex Twin's SAW2.

For real droney stuff, I can recommend Lustmord (especially the collab with the aforementioned Robert Rich on Stalker) and Stars of the Lid (really relaxing, Tired Sounds of.. and ..And Their Refinement of the Decline are awesome).

For a little more guitar, Grouper.

For a little more chip, Ilkae wink

Edit: Oh yeah, the OSTs of the Homeworld games. Not kidding!

Hm, what makes you say so?

The diode ring and the transformers. I'm a total amateur when it comes to circuitry, but I could imagine that this setup does a bit of crosstalk. That's really just a wild guess on my part though.

From what I get from Wikipedia articles (german and english), ring modulation seems to be a simple multiplication function. However, I could imagine that this effect has very individual quirks in analog synths due to the parts involved.

could you explain in what way the modifier is modifying the carrier?
i mean from an analog synth's perspective, is the modifier basically a LFO in audio range patched to pitch

Yes, although there is the alternative of 'patching it' to phase, which has a very similar effect.

to the VCA

That would be AM (=Amplitude Modulation). AM effects actually sound somewhat similar to FM, but it's still distinctly different. Combine AM + FM ftw!

is it ringmodded

No, ringmods work differently. I have to confess I'm not exactly sure how (I think it's a type of AM?).

Awesome idea, Lazerbeat! All power to you! I absolutely adore FM synthesis and should get back to it again.

Agreed on all counts. 'Today' is awesome, more would be very welcome.

To you mean reverse engineering by ear or by ear or when you have the settings for the algorithms and stuff?

Ear and waveform I guess. For example, I have a sound and would like to know if it's more likely to be op->op->op->op or (op->op)+(op->op). On which modulator would be which envelope to cause a certain effect. And so on.

Hm, I'd love a general overview of how to get a sound from my brain into an FM synth. Especially rules of thumb for how to choose modulation arrays when I want to get a specific sound.
Something on how to reverse engineer FM sounds would be cool as well.

I'm in for the next one.

Of course it is Amiga, but i dont like those Amiga soundtracks, which sounds like C64 chiptunes, but with samples, even that basspad on a C64 is more animated with filter sweeps.

That is a ..strange way to handle somebody's request for information?
