Why is it weird? No offense, just been wondering what people feel weird about the interface of MPT.

Maybe there is too many buttons, it pollutes the screen. And also, I'll never get used to a horizontal pattern list, instead of vertical.

But it's probably because I've been using FT2 for 3 years and I'm used to that.

I like how they've spread out the arrangement in a horizontal pattern list, plus, doing a white styled interface was a really good idea in combination with a lot of buttons, it doesn't feel 'crowded' to me in this way.

I like Milky as well but I still fall back to MPT when seriously making some XM's.

MPT interface is weird, and I don't know much about milkytracker.

but FT2 has the best tracker interface ever IMO.

Girls usually tell me they get drippin' wet from me. And when I then tell them I make chiptunes they slide off their chairs. I. Yes. Awesome.

OpenMPT is horrible to use and not really anything like the smooth workflow of FastTracker 2.  If you're looking for a "modern version" then Milkytracker is your best bet.  But tbh even that has some odd design choices that make it a second-best choice.

Yeah, manual is probably a good bet but the best way you'll learn is just loading in a bunch of XMs and looking at what they're doing.  It also has a built-in help system with all commands and shortcuts (just click the Help button on the main screen) and you don't need much more than that.

I love OpenMPT's use.

As for the thread-opener, just try out both and find out what you like best.

there is also melcom's chiptunes archive which is only 80 megabytes and only includes chiptunes
http://www.chiptune.de/
it focuses "too much" on chiptunes which is good because doskpop and rave music suck

you can also download all of modarchive, it is around 30 gigabytes for the 2007 snapshot and around 1 gigabyte for each year's updates since then. unfortunately files are no sorted by artist but by file name which is NOT GREAT. this does not focus on chiptune. i think there are 120000 songs here

chiptune.com also has an ftp and a selection of modules which is much smaller and handpicked by rez. it shouldn't take you long to download all of that. given the url you can probably guess it focuses on chipmusic.

the problem with downloding a million chiptunes at once is....... well, imagine downloading all of 8bc. 99% of it sucks smile

Only thing with chiptune.com is that it's incredibly outdated. Just go thru some mods from modland and find out what artists you like, most of them got tons more mods and you'll be busy with listening those for a while.

Interested.

There are a couple of Gameboy demo's right? Maybe you should hook up with those guys and try if you can do a musicdisk or something.

Concerning other platforms, I know there's a working snd -> prg converter for the Atari ST. That would let you convert your songs to working programs you can put on diskette. But you'd have to make some Atari songs first. big_smile

Wow, I didn't know people actually look at the music section here.

hey mods is it possible to partition this discussion into a new topic? I'm pretty interested in where this is going but don't want to keep derailing

Anyone can make a new thread, your new thread can contain quote bbcodes.

Much of the side discussion is covered in a "how do you play live" thread if you want to necro one. I can add the following:

If your personality and/or music don't lend to jumping and dancing, but you try jumping and dancing anyway, your audience will see through it. If you're not sure what your style or "pose" ought to be, find other musicians in your genre (chips not necessary.) It will take practice much like finding your own "sound."

The context of your audience is of critical importance, whether you have a stage separating you from them or not, and whether your performance is invited or not. Your performance begins when your ass is in the venue, not you take the stage, set up, soundcheck, or whatever- your very arrival is part of your gig, and your clothes, whatever they may be, are your costume.

Your audience may not be interested in your gig. How do you adjust? Are you able to do it? Will people remember you in a good way when they leave?

What kind of audience do you want, the people coming for your wardrobe or music?

You sound like a "I earn 25 million dollar a year-rockstar", I seriously couldn't care less about what the audience thinks of my t-shirt.

Do not agree with the dancing and people seeing through it as well. Our chiptunes are not for live purposes per se, yet the basslines and drums sound pretty good on a big PA, if you give a proper example and show people you're enjoying yourself, people will join that vibe faster.

Take on Me has pretty much chipcovers as well.

quite a lot of them got the rhythm wrong and did the start in straight quavers ~ that's not how i remember popcorn at all

but it's funny at least, and some of them are really cool

I guess it's the same when you hear covers of Golden Brown having 3/4 timing the entire song.
