Sounds like fun!

1. How long have you been making chiptunes?
2010

2. What inspired you to begin creating your own music?
The soundtracks to classic video games and Overclocked Remixes. Plus I already had an active project going without any real genre restrictions (I just produce whatever I feel like)

3. What do you personally use to produce chiptunes (Hardware and Software)?
MacOSX, Garageband, Magical8bitplug, Chipsounds, QuadraSID, TAL NoiseMaker, Kontakt, Reaktor, wav samples, soundfonts

4. What genre of music (besides chip) inspires you the most?
Ambient, drone, downtempo/chill, lounge/exotica, idm, electronica

5. What do you know about music theory? Have you ever taken a formal music class?
The basic rudiments of melody, harmony and rhythm. Mostly self-taught, plus some internet research. I also consider having been a music lover from a very young age as having instilled a basic understanding of music theory in me.

6. What do you recommend for someone who would like to begin making chiptunes (tutorials, software, hardware, online resources)?
I would recommend starting with what you know. If you're already working in a DAW then start off this way. Use a plug-in like Magical8bitplug to create your own synth patches and drum sounds. This will give you a basic understanding of why 8-bit music sounds the way it does. From there you can switch to chip-style softsynths or try your hand at some authentic chip hardware if you're inclined to do so.

7. Do you perform at any live shows?
Not since 2000, never with my current project.

There are areas of San Francisco where there are so many homeless people begging for change in one spot that you can literally be trampled to death, much like Emperor Penguins trampling a chick to death in a mad melee to decide who's going to keep it warm.

again, 16-bit WAV, Kontakt 5, Shortcircuit 1.

have fun!

....and I see you revised the look/graphics a bit! The site still had the old look this morning when I checked.

Thanks for another great pack!

I'll just audition sounds, patches and settings, sometimes even effects chains to see if I can discover some new sound that inspires me. I try not to rely on loops too much, but I'm really stuck I'll audition some loops and see if I can't at least become inspired by them. Sometimes a single loop can inspire me to create a whole tune around it.

yeah, we all know i'll probably close this at some point, but kinda hoping everyone can maybe just get it out of their system real quick and we can go back to normal around here

This isn't normal?

I was hoping you could produce my Gnarsauce tribute album for me; mid-range cack brostep please. Just try to avoid TRVE CVLT DVBSTEP or no cash for you buddy.

More great suggestions! This truly is an awesome thread. I knew there would be a million other artists I would forget to post, not the least of which is Red Fog who does some crucial drone work! I'll try to post more as I think of them. Keep up the good work people!

Ah, this thread is right up my alley. Let me see if I can recommend some stuff that hasn't already been mentioned:

Loscil - "Endless Falls" and "Plume" albums in particular are my faves. "Stases" is also great and it's a free download on last.fm

Julien Neto - bascially anything by him that you can get ahold of is friggin' mint

Windy & Carl - not exactly instrumental, but Windy's vocals are so washed out in reverb that they may as well be a synth pad

Klaus Schulze - his "Timewind" LP in particular is a space ambient/berlin school classic

Demdike Stare - supposedly they source all of their sounds from obscure vinyl. Lot's of interesting dark ambient and tribal ambient atmospheres

....and if you don't mind a little chilled downtempo mixed with your ambient:

Solar Fields
Aes Dana
H.U.V.A. Network (a collab between the two aforementioned artists)
Carbon Based Lifeforms

and finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my own ambient/dark ambient/drone project Subterrestrial. Here are a few I'd like to recommend:

Conspiracy Music
The City Beneath
Immutable Law
Pre-Columbian Exposition
Nature is Infinite
Forgotten Places

Neo Geo stuff usually is. The carts alone were outrageously priced, not to mention the console itself. Maddening, since they have the coolest games!

more coming soon.

Thank you so much and freakin' Kontakt patches, too!!! I'm a big fan of your excellent blog and always appreciate what you do for the electronic music community.

Exactly! I love his ironic use of the Ouroboros analogy. Probably hasn't the foggiest idea of what it means or how it's actually more appropriate than insulting.

It's funny too.... this could almost pass for something you'd read in The Onion if it were written more objectively.

I don't know.... lots of heavily-trafficked blogs do as much or less. Post it and they will come..... eventually. I just think you probably don't want to be calling it a netlabel if you are posting stuff that's already been released on another label.
