After making this I decided that only 3 different duty cycles were not enough so I upgraded it to 128 different cycles, so every possible cc value will now change the duty cycle.

Here is a recording of it: http://chipmusic.org/tmtgr/music/4bit-synth-duty-test

All I did was change the update_duty_cycle function to this:

void update_duty_cycle()
{
    OCR1B = OCR1A * (duty_cycle / 128.0f);
}

I've had my eye on one of these for a while now too, gathering up all those parts is just too much of a hassle. Would these still work with one of the 4-pin DMG link cables? I know some midi interfaces use a 5th pin for power

Should do, as long as the arduinoboy has its own power supply from somewhere.

I seem to recall that low-gain mentioned to solder a capacitor to the jack line, in order to catch spikes. Can't give any more detailed instructions on that unfortunately, I'm a software guy. hmm

It's a called a decoupling capacitor.

Usually you can just desolder both wires going to the toy's speaker then solder them to an audio jack of your choice, the most common being 1/4 inch mono. Then you can easily plug that into you mixer or whatever you want.

This makes sense of that video btw.

Whoever wrote the shit in the link that's in the quote above wrote:

They really do know nothing.

Did it today and it works big_smile
I decided to ground the unused inputs just to be safe, but it seemed to be ok without grounding them.

I already have some of these.

Edit:
After thinking about this, there's no real reason why it shouldn't work.

i'd like to use it as a compact way to play .nsf files live.

Couldn't you just pan both channels center using your mixer if you're doing it live?

So I checked bibbin's blog, nitro2k01's blog and nonfinite's store and they all seem to use 74hc04 for their screen biversion.
Will it be ok if I use 74hc14? According to this the only difference is that the 74hc14 uses schmitt triggers instead.
So will 74hc14 work fine?
