I guess I don't understand what the difference is between using two DMGs versus adding synths or guitars or any additional equipment, really. It's not pure 1xLSDJ, is all. You're just adding to the equation. People are bringing up not being technically impressed or questioning the point of composing with a game boy, so I wonder what people think about LSDJ + anything else. Am I missing something? Just curious.

Re: 2 x LSDJ vs 1 x LSDJ (134 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
I've been working on an EP of 2xLSDJ material and I have some thoughts on this, since my last EP was 1xLSDJ. Like Danimal noted, 2 DMGs can simply be used to make a more lush sound while still retaining the charm of the DMG sound palette. I like the way the DMG sounds and I'm comfortable using it as a platform, so instead of bringing in other programs or trackers to extend that sound, it seems logical to just use a 2nd Game Boy.
I write the song on one DMG and then use the second to fill out the sound. Stereo arps, an extra layer of echoes, a second WAV channel for lead (or doubling the kick or adding sub bass.) Most of the songs would be perfectly recognizable on one DMG. The 2nd just extends the sonic palette.
Here's an example: http://soundcloud.com/roboctopus/roboctopus-racer-hex (This isn't a "final" version, so pardon the kind of noisy recording.)
Not all the channels are running all the time on the 2nd DMG. It's really just used to fill out the stereo field in most places.
I'm not trying to impress any body with technical skills, so I don't worry if people are unimpressed with my programming chops. I get that technical chops are a draw for some people, but I just want to add a few more beepy sounds. (Just throwing that out there since L-tron mentioned he wasn't as technically impressed by a lot of 2xLSDJ stuff.)
It definitely takes more work for 2xLSDJ though! I feel like I've been putting "finishing touches" on tracks for months.

I have a series of articles on more advanced techniques: http://www.noisechannel.org/category/lsdj-you
And like Saskrotch said, don't just use one channel for one thing. You can put arps or echoes in between your pulse kicks, for instance. To really fill a track out, find every bit of free space you can and fill it with something.

Kitsch is right. I write a series of articles at noichan called "LSDJ & You." http://www.noisechannel.org/category/lsdj-you
These articles are aimed at intermediate LSDJ users, though, and assume you know all the basics.
I really, really recommend starting out by reading the LSDJ manual http://www.littlesounddj.com/lsd/latest/documentation/
It's very informative and well-written. Start there and then check out some beginner tutorials on YouTube.

Re: cm.o fathers/mothers? (26 replies, posted in General Discussion)
I have a daughter who turned two in July. She's actually the reason I got back into chip after a four-year hiatus. It's risky playing mandolin or banjo when a baby is sleeping fitfully in the next room. I needed a way to make music in the evening that was quiet, so I dusted off my Game Boy and haven't looked back.

Re: Getting a GBA in two Days. Recommend Good Games? (30 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Same response someone else gave in the last thread, but a flash cart. Specifically so you can play Mother 3 and Boktai 3, in English. Boktai 1 and 2 were going to be my main recommendations otherwise. They're incredibly overlooked Kojima titles that need more love (kind of like Zone of the Enders). I'd say those two, mixed with some other games people have mentioned (Astro Boy, Advance Wars 2, Metroid and Vania) make up probably the best GBA games.
If you aren't willing to do a flash cart, then I still recommend both Mother 3 and Boktai 3 if you're up for using online translations, these games seriously should not be overlooked.
Yeah, this. I think the EZ-Flash IV is the only one still readily available for the GBA, but I recently dumped the Mother 3 translation onto mine and it has worked like a charm so far. Definitely worth your time.

Re: Getting a GBA in two Days. Recommend Good Games? (30 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
what the fuck is happening to this place
Seriously?
This is a forum that promotes a community where people make music based on, with, inspired by, etc., old video game hardware. And you're surprised/confused/chagrined when people ask for video game recommendations?
You should be happy OP put this thread in the Nintendo Handhelds section.
8bc is dead. This scene is TINY. People want to socialize and chat about shared interests as much as they want to share music. I think it's reasonable to assume shared interests might include video games. Sure, OP could have googled "best GBA games", but maybe OP wants the opinions of some like-minded souls on this site. I don't understand why that is so upsetting to some people.
If you don't want to see these threads, maybe you should beg the mods to create a video game recommendation section and disconnect it from the home page so they don't have to briefly offend you.
/rant
You should skip collecting games and get an EZ flash IV cart. You can download the roms and play them on your GBA with ease.
You should check out these games:
Drill Dozer
Astro Boy: Omega Factor
Ninja 5-0 (way cooler than the name implies)
Final Fantasy VI (Hey, you can play it again in your pocket!)
Golden Sun
Advance Wars/Advance Wars 2
Mario Golf (Deeper than you would imagine)
[edited to correct the name of the flash cart.]

Re: should I use a PC or a Wii to emulate LSDJ? (23 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
the wav exporting *sounds* messy while it's going on, but the end result should sound fine.
I do a lot of writing on BGB and then dump the sav on a cart for recording and live play, and I usually don't have to tweak the sound much once I get it on the cart. BGB is pretty darn close. I've tried vba and it sounded a bit off to my ears. That was a year or two ago though.

I can't comment on the Wii, but the best emulated sound I've come across if via the emulator BGB. Sounds pretty accurate. I'd say don't mess with the wii and just use a laptop running BGB.
