shitty name, should have gone with meatspin

Awesome!

Good big_smile

Hopefully this encourages people to step out of their comfort zones a little!

We're at the halfway point! Got some good stuff so far. How is everyone going with their tracks?

oh shiiiiiit

First post updated. Let's go!!

Hrm... I agree that effects should not be allowed - but I would argue that EQ/slight limiting or compression is not an 'effect' per se. (albeit can of course be used as one, if "abused")

There is not really any point in disallowing the use of EQs, this is something you would use on any instrument or recording really. It does not (necessarily) alter the sound in the same way as a reverb or delay does, but can be used to improve and bring out details that were there originally.

I mean - let's be real - the sound is coming from a GBA/GB/etc. Some EQ is needed. big_smile

yup, EQ/limiting/compression is fine. Let's keep it raw though, no verbs or delays, and no distortion other than natural nl2 overdrive big_smile

may one record on tape?

sure!

what effects are ok?  reverb i hope. maybe a delay?

I'm considering making it strictly no effects so people can try to get interesting with sound design. Delay can be easily faked in nanoloop; reverb is a bit more difficult but I've heard it done before.

awesome, got some good names for this already!

DESCRIPTION

Let's make some long nanoloop tracks!

This is a compilation for those who either can't write tracks short enough to be considered for the usual chiptune compilations, or for those who usually write short tracks and want to experiment a little. Basically anyone who wants to write long-form tracks big_smile

GUIDELINES

I've made these a little more strict than I first intended, but consider it a challenge to get creative.

- Any version of Nanoloop is allowed (including multiple copies of same/different versions). This includes the iOS/Android versions, but to even the playing field, please avoid using external samples.
- MINIMUM length of 10 minutes. No maximum.
- ANY genre is fine, but a minimalist/repetitive version of chosen genre is encouraged.
- Submitted tracks must have some consistency throughout the compostion. Tracks with multiple sections are great, but try to avoid a "megamix" of clearly very different pieces. This isn't a collection of EPs.
- NO external effects or sound generators, with the exception of using EQ/compression. Please note that I may get these tracks lightly mastered/limited just to get volume levels consistent.
- External clock signals are permitted, ONLY to control speed of sequencer.
- Editing after recording is permitted.
- Collaborations are permitted and encouraged.

Yeah, even being able to have finer control over say, the L or R channel's pitch could lead to some interesting unison/microtone possibilities.

No problem, I'm pretty happy with it as it is, any extra features are a bonus big_smile

It would be possible for one channel, but I haven't implemented it yet. I tried PWM, but it's clicky and generally not so spectacular. In FM mode it's more fun because it modulates the modulation frequency. But still clicky. Maybe cutoff would make more sense.

that's a shame re: PWM. Do you have an audio example of how clicky it is? Could it be used as an interesting exploit? big_smile

The option of cutoff modulation on one channel would be great though. Sometimes I want a good filtered bass sound but the S channel isn't appropriate (e.g. if it's playing chords).

thanks oliver, you're a legend! I'm very much fine with beta testing big_smile

I wonder if the D50 editor could be used with the MT-32? Maybe not, but considering they use the same architecture, might be worth a try..

Too bad there isn't a dedicated MT-32 panel, because ctrlr is great software.

Otherwise the DOSBox option may be your best bet. I've heard reports that MidiQuest isn't quite as awesome as the website says, but I haven't tried it so should probably shut up lol.

I love those old sound modules/romplers. I've had a few (including an MT-32 almost 20 years ago, but then the MIDI ports stopped working and I didn't know how to fix them at the time), but I've currently settled on a JV1010 (quite modern compared to the MT-32) and a Yamaha SY22 (no interpolation on samples!).. and am tempted by the PMA-5 every time I see one for sale.
