Yea, there really isn't a chip scene here either. My group, The Lameboyz, typically just plays with  bands/djs, but we usually get a really good response... But who knows, with this new 8-bit bar opening soon, the chip scene might grow to beyond just us and Shitbird.

My phone is full of these... I always feel like an idiot when I go back and listen to myself mouthing tubas and drums.

Seeing as I've been gutting and re-capping broken game gears for the past week, I tried this yesterday and it works flawlessly. Great idea with the game gear d-pad. The rubber buttons internally fit exactly the same and they're the same size as a game boy d-pad. The only modification was boring out the case and making alignment tabs with epoxy and plastic. Works amazingly well!

Savannah is such a badass town. I tried setting a show up there last august without luck, though. I just couldn't find a venue besides the wormhole and some rock bar on tybee. Goodluck, if you find a spot to play, I got some friends down there that would probably like to check you out.

All you need for badass shows:

  1. Gameboy(s) with music software of your choice

  2. A mixer to balance and equalize your boys

  3. A table to set the above items on

  4. Cables to connect all of the above.

  5. A venue with a PA (they usually will have a DI box) and space to move about

  6. And, most importantly, Badass jams and lots of hoes

I wouldn't over-complicate it, just write some songs and play them live. I do, however, think that pro sound is most necessary in a live setting, but if you don't have it, I wouldn't let it deter you from playing.

For real man, just kill it every time. If they don't like it, fuck em.

I was taken away in handcuffs by the school police officer when I did this in high school... Evidently they haven't had one since (this was back in 2003)

I wanted to originally do a neo geo pocket color joystick, but didn't want to tear one up. Game gear is a brilliant idea. The d-pad was honestly just a little experiment and joke, I really just wanted to test the start select buttons.

I just cut the last few seconds of the first song and paste it in a second track over the beginning of the next song.

Haha! I just had a bunch of parts and felt like fucking around. The start select buttons are actually really responsive. I took a little too much out of the buttons so they need a little tweaking. The d pad actually works really well... It just looks really goofy.

That d pad really was a bad idea...

Anyone ever try this? I wanted some solid start/select buttons, so I gutted an aftermatket genesis controller and they swapped out pretty well. Then I swapped the a and b buttons from master system controller and, after boring out the gameboy case and drilling the inside of the buttons, was able to swap them out as well... I took it a little too far with the master system d pad, though; it's a little big and sluggish. Oh well, after some paint and fiberglass it may not look so absurd.

This is awesome! Couldn't you carve the guide slots out of the case rather than the buttons?
