I guess I don't know what you mean by "sample to" C, or G or whatever. If you mean which note to map it to, yeah I would stick with the root note. I'm with ya on that.

Personally I always try to have an intention for each sample as I record it, but the song can get "brittle" that way.

I will reserve judgement until I hear a non-YouTube version of the TB-3. Analog simulation is pretty good these days. I would expect that Roland could get the subtleties of the original filter and osc, if anyone could. Not too excited for this though.

Obvious old school vinyl: 8 bit construction set. I'd love to have it but prob hard to get a hold of.

Here's  the designated thread or whatever: http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/6559/ … -app-v103/

Well it's really just  based on the RSS feed  in the music section. The cool thing about it is that it lets you grab as many items as you want - cm feed only keeps the last 500. So old things are falling off the end as new stuff is added. It's a "catcher." I can add a setting for how many you want to keep at one time.. But yeah it's an RSS thing.

I may be willing to open source it in the future, so others can add things.

2. Why do you think that trackers are good for touchscreens? They are based on text input and if you try any of the existing mobile trackers you will see that they can't compare with desktop or even gamepad trackers in terms of workflow.

3. Not sure how the likes of LGPT would work on touchscreen unless some serious UI changes are made. Even games with virtual gamepads mostly play like shit. Why not use LSDJ under a GB emu on your device to see how it fits? I find it quite troublesome when I need to hold 2 virtual buttons and press the third one.

I've tried many different approaches to composing on ios. Piano rolls - way too cumbersome. You have to drag all over, pinch and zoom. I hate it. 16 step sequencers (like nanoloop) - I just find it too hard to think about the whole song in terms of little loops. That's a personal thing, as many people are good with nanoloop. So the problem with those approaches seems to be that they are not condensing enough song information on the screen.

Trackers on the other hand are super succinct. A tracker can basically be seen as a text-based musical score, scrolling vertically. The problem, as you mention, is the text part. Sunvox deals with this in a pretty intuitive way - just use a virtual piano for notes, and little keypads for the parameters.

I think something like LGPT could be made, you just have to get creative. It does require a rethink for sure.

GB emulators are no good (I've tried), for the same reason street fighter on ios/android is no good, there aren't buttons.

I actually think sunvox is great, it's mostly the navigation I don't care for.

if a tracker is "a piece of software where you press the Z key on your qwerty keyboard to enter the note C", then trackers suck on touch screen, everyone will agree. actually probably the two most popular trackers on this forum dont use a qwerty keyboard, already, tho, so its perfectly possible to tailor the tracker concept to non-qwerty input devices as was already demonstrated by lsdj/lgpt/ntrq and so on. without it losing tracker status.

Yeah that's a good point. At one time it seemed crazy to have a tracker on a 5 button device.

I think piggytracker would work really well in the touch interface if you replaced the screenmap and commands with touch menus. Im not a fan of how sunvox does this on touch devices though, so maybe its harder than it first appears.

I find sunvox totally useable, but it's a little funky. My theory on that is that it has to be portable between like 8 different platforms, so maybe that's why it has a non-native feel (no inertial scrolling, no modal views flying around, the way the cursor works). It's both a strength and a limiting factor.

imagine SWIPE-ing around the different screens in piggy, oh boy

i think the main thing is to make sure its touch -> tracker rather than touch -> virtual querty keyboard -> tracker

wink Yeah there are so many ways to approach navigation. You're absolutely right about the message flow.

Yes I do think its perfect for trackers. At first I was thrown off of the idea by the lack of a keyboard, but I've since realized that it's probably the best way to make music on such a device. Clunky skeuorphic Daws, and piano rolls are just a waste of space on such a small screen. Anyway I'm working on a project in this vain currently.

Could be a warped case. Try to firmly press the top of the cartridge against the gameboy. Or push it in different ways.

Omg these are really good. Lots of cool stuff going on.

Well, if you want to let people listen, you could use sound cloud and post the links. Just disallow downloads.

I've never done that. Dialogue clips sure but I've never been interested in sampling a popular song.

Yeah, I mean basically anything that's copyrighted. Sampling songs is trickier.

Okay, for example breakbeats. That's a song that you don't own at all. But it's like a nod to another artist... You're not pretending that you made it. I don't know, I guess even that is a little sketchy, because those drummers who made those breaks do deserve money.

We've all done that. You can be upfront about it, or you can obfuscate it, and pretend like it's yours. What Timbaland did was totally brazen, whole track theft. But it would have been fine if he had tipped his hat to GRG, and the other dude. In my mind anyway.
