Is it important that it be from an actual game? I can't think of a game with a sample like that, but you could make it yourself or have someone make it for you. The SNES "sound" is pretty much just a matter of sample rates, tight cutting / short looping, and that amazing cheap delay effect.

Here's the aforementioned VegaPlay-based ROM, in case you like your tunes guitar-free & playing on native hardware like God intended:

Agreed on Monster Party, it's pretty cool. Some others (all NES):

Blaster Master (idk if it's "underrated" but it's amazing)
A Boy and His Blob
Captain Comic (a lot of people hate this one, but i dig it; ymmv)
Destiny of an Emperor
Kirby's Adventure (probably not "underrated" either but if you haven't played it, you gotta)
Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos
Toobin'
Xexyz
Ys

Here's a site that has a review of every (US) NES title, in case there are some you're curious about: http://www.questicle.net/p/list-of-nes-games.html

Man, if only you'd posted this, like, 5 years ago... I grew up in CDA. Maybe things have changed but the "music scene" was pretty sleepy up there when I left. Good luck finding folks.

Just posting cuz it's kinda surreal to see this thread at all, I guess.

I think the question of whether you actually enjoy composing music is the only important one. Not whether you enjoy being seen as a musician, or whether other people enjoy your music. Loving it is the only good way through.

Not to say that you can take your feelings about it on a given day and universalize those. Everyone gets frustrated & discouraged with the things they love from time to time. But if you don't fundamentally enjoy the activity, it's okay - actually it'd be a good idea - to quit. If what you really enjoy is listening to music, or analyzing music, or hanging out with musical people, those things are all still open to you.

Finally, remember that your value as a human being doesn't stem from being the best at something or even good at something. Life isn't all economics, and it's okay to do something just because you like it.

okay for real if this is considered an above average amount of time to spend on a song i'm officially super embarrassed about how long it takes me me to write tracks that can't even come close to yours

oh geez, same here. Really, most tracks don't take that long, but there are occasional tracks that i really take to/have trouble with & subsequently ruin for myself by over-polishing.

Sometimes I put so much time into a single track that I'm like, "I could've made a whole EP in that time" so I just release it as an EP.

This is solid. Listening to it reminds me of just how heavy the classical influences are in a lot of the best old video game music. I remember wanting to make something sorta like this once upon a time, but then I realized I don't know enough about classical music. I'm happy that someone else does.

I've owned a couple of Lexicon units. They don't have driver or sound quality issues, but I think the hardware itself is a bit spotty. After a couple of years, one of them didn't work at all, and the other one had a malfunctioning input.

Back when I was pretty broke I got an Alesis Multimix 4 USB mixer. For how stupidly cheap it was, I'd recommend it. It has never given me any problems, and it has a two channel phantom-powered (though not very nice-sounding) preamp, which is pretty good for $50. I've mostly just used it for digitizing stuff from tape decks; I don't think I'd want to record an album through its preamps. But it's a good option, especially for someone who's poor & doesn't want to deal with RCA ins.

my love for the 2A03 grows daily & i will - nay, must - enter this competition

why must the good die young sad

yes

I don't have any more info than you do on what's normal, but I think it's more important to have a mix you like than to do what's normal. People don't mind turning their stereo up/down as much as the major labels would have us believe.

you're joking, right?

Of course. In all seriousness, the article is very good.
