I can only go by Bandcamp download stats. It's available through other channels, so I guess that covers the remainder.

Edit: or Decktonic's solution. My reply was too slow.

It seems to me that one benefit of operating under the 'chiptune' label is that it's a niche area with (as chunter points out) an existing organised network of people behind it. The average rock band faces the dilemma of figuring out exactly who to present their music to; there's a good chance it will get lost in amongst the other 1000 guitar-band-style releases that month, unless they're applying a very specific label to themselves that allows people to find them more easily. I guess the same applies to any broad description, 'electronica' or what have you.

Also I find myself downloading & enjoying chip releases that, genre-wise, might come under a category I would normally avoid. Same applies to chip gigs - you see shows with 5 artists all playing arguably a different genre of music, but chip fans stay and enthusiastically enjoy all of them. Being open minded is part of it, I guess, but the chip source is the unifying factor.

Totally agree with 4mat & Decktonic about a required purchase (in whatever form) legitimizing a release. It doesn't even need to be money - alternatives like giving an email address for an album download, tweet for a song, etc. still require a commitment from the listener and give something back to the artist. I think it's worthwhile to have some stuff available at no cost & with no strings attached though.

Anyway, download stats:

Challenge! - 626 since December 2009
Comptroller - 381 since March 2010

I listened to all of these songs today, and I will listen to them all again tomorrow. Believe it.

Only launched this a couple of weeks back. Still have some things to add.

This was such a good year. I've written a detailed post about all the awesome people I met & events I was involved in here, but I don't expect everyone to read it.

Summary: met many cool people and heard a lot of great music. Felt glad to be alive and have some involvement in chipmusic. Very excited about 2011.

I wrote this recently with sick bass in mind. I leave it to you to judge the results.

This is a benefit compilation for Edinburgh venue The Forest, featuring contributions from every performer at 2010's Ultrachip festival - Sycamore Drive, Firebrand Boy, Enfant Bastard, arcadecoma., The Tin Foil Hat Brigade, an-cat-max, Fueldiva, Jellica, Comptroller, Edward Shallow, gwEm, Diamonds & Dynamite, Samwave, Bit Face and Tonylight.

All proceeds go directly to The Forest, an autonomous arts and cultural space in Edinburgh that currently faces closure unless it can raise enough funds to purchase its premises.

£5 for 15 tracks, most of which are exclusive, rare or new. Support a worthy cause and get some good music at the same time. Stream/download here.

I am listening. I am enjoying.

I know some of the forum regulars here attended Ultrachip this past August, and so would have experienced the wonder that is The Forest. It is (in their own words) "the only truly autonomous arts and cultural space in Edinburgh and [has] hosted thousands of free events, exhibitions and straight-up parties".

It's a converted church that functions as a cafe and venue, spanning two floors and staffed entirely by volunteers. All events are free to attend. This is a venue in the centre of Edinburgh that allowed us to put on a two-night chipmusic event at the peak of the Edinburgh Festival, without charging us anything. That's pretty special.

The Forest now faces closure unless they can raise the £500,000 required to purchase the building. This is an extremely tall order but hey, let's think positively.

It seems to me that this is a venue with some significance to the UK chip community (they've hosted various chipmusic events there beyond Ultrachip) so this situation was worth highlighting here. If anyone feels like doing their bit to help save The Forest, they have a Paypal donation button on their site:

Thanks.

Too many exits, too many sculptures! smile

This was good fun. I enjoyed being involved and present. Thanks to gwEm for putting the whole thing together, and also for playing an awesome set.

Thanks for the comments! We're glad our sounds are enjoyed.

On Tuesday night we played our last gig before our eventual formation 9 years from now. Pics and muddy audio available here.

So as well as doing solo chip stuff, I am also one third of Beats of Rage. We create low-bit digital hardcore using a Commodore 64, DMG, guitar and shouting. Expect hissy Amen breaks and SID bass, with tactical employment of melody and warnings about 2019.

Our album is out today on GM4A Records - available to stream & download here. Hopefully some people will enjoy it.

This was awesome. But there was some pleasant, well-received busking also. Evidence:

This whole weekend was incredible. It was great to meet all of you guys. So much good music. I'm still processing everything, and I have loads of video clips to go through & post. Check progress here: Ultrachip Youtube Channel.

Massive thanks to all performers for coming out to play, to the VJs for casting wonderful images, tutorial givers for sharing their knowledge & time, and all those who made the trip to attend and dance like maniacs. I had a blast.

Ultrachip 2011!!! Let's do it!
