Re: What do you carry your gear in? (91 replies, posted in General Discussion)
I like using the original clear nintendo DMG box thingys.
I have two of those! They're OK I guess.
I've been hoping to find something similar to the soft case/sleeve I just got for my Dell Mini 9
Of course, they don't make one for the DMG01. But maybe if there's a modern device of a similar size? Any ideas folks?

Re: buying soldering iron, need help (33 replies, posted in Circuit Bending)
Temperature control is almost a necessity, but BitPop's temperature-fixed iron will definitely be better than no temperature control at all.
Out of interest, why would you recommend temperature control for PCB soldering? I've reworked everything from SMT netbook and laptop motherboards to through hole fibreglass boards out of a Marshall JCM 800 stack. Never felt the need for more or less temperature. Not wishing to argue, just wanting to know why you would need it.

If you can afford it, go for a Weller WTCP51. Easily the best solder station for a reasonable amount of money. The iron is preset temperature, not adjustable, but is thermostatically controlled at the correct temperature for PCB soldering. I used one for repairing laptop motherboards and it's perfect.
If you can't afford one, the only alternative worth considering is an Aoyue (or CSI, which is the same thing with a different badge on). But after a Weller, nothing else compares.

Re: Guitar for ChipTunes (18 replies, posted in Audio Production)
Tuning and Tone. Cheap guitars and amps suffer with both of these things. If you don't already have (or access to) a good quality guitar and amp, then you need to beg or borrow from somewhere or get saving. Nothing worse than dull, muffled, out of tune guitars

Not actually heard of DSI That sure does look sweet! It was the Prophet 5 VSTi which made me go and buy a Virus, love those fat sounds.
I might get saving for a DSI now

Re: Mixer Problems! Please help (7 replies, posted in Other Hardware)
Many PA systems are mono (typically the larger ones), but they should mix left and right into one mono signal.
Presumably you are using a passive stereo mixer with active speakers? That being the case, are the speakers connected to separate (L+R) outputs? Or are they daisy chained somehow? You can check this by using a mono source such as a mic, and panning it....well, other than actually looking at the sockets
Failing all the above, the other option is to plug L+R from the DMG into two separate channels

Re: Mssiah Mono Synthesizer Controller Vst and standalone is here (18 replies, posted in Commodore Computers)
They are more limited, but they're for different things really. The bassline is for those at home with 303 step sequencing and isn't really meant to capture the sound of the SID, and the monosynth is for those who want a nice simple monosynth, again not really SID sounding.
I agree, the sequencer will really unlock the full potential of the SID, but there are so many controls the interface is gonna be a bitch! I'm sure one will appear, but one step at a time, let's see how the monosynth goes, help Luke perfect it (if required) and take it from there.
If course if nothing appears in 6 months we all need to hunt him down and beat him with sticks until he builds it
